Freshdesk is the cheaper of the two once you need chat and messaging: Freshdesk Omni costs $29 to $119 per agent a month billed annually, while Zendesk Suite costs $55 to $115 and quotes its Enterprise plan through sales. Zendesk puts telephony in every Suite plan and sells workforce and contact center add-ons, and the two bill their AI agents differently: Freshdesk per session, Zendesk per verified resolution.
For email-only support, both start at $19 per agent a month (Freshdesk pricing, Freshdesk Omni pricing and Zendesk pricing, all checked September 27, 2026). This guide puts the two side by side from the vendors’ own pages: plans, AI billing, channels, help centers, what 10 agents pay and how to move between them. All prices are USD list prices. If your tickets often end in bug reports or feature requests, the last section covers a third option for software teams.

Pricing per agent
Both vendors charge per agent per month and show annual billing by default. Freshworks labels annual billing “Save 20%” and Zendesk “20% off annual”, so paying month to month costs more on both.
Price per agent per month, billed annually
| Plan | Billed annually | Billed monthly | What the plan adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freshdesk Growth | $19 | $23 | Ticketing and a shared inbox, a customer portal and knowledge base, Freddy AI Agent |
| Freshdesk Pro | $55 | $66 | A multilingual help desk, custom dashboards, intelligent routing, multiple SLA policies |

| Zendesk Suite Professional | $115 | $149 | Admin Copilot, App Builder, skills-based routing, an IVR phone tree |
| Zendesk Suite Enterprise | Quoted by sales | Quoted by sales | Intelligent triage, approval workflows, a sandbox, custom agent roles |
Prices are per agent per month, and each plan includes the one above it in the same product line. Monthly billing costs about 20 percent more per agent on Freshdesk and 25 to 32 percent more on Zendesk: ten agents on Zendesk Suite Professional pay $1,150 a month on annual billing and $1,490 month to month.
For a like-for-like comparison with chat and messaging, compare Freshdesk Omni with Zendesk Suite. For email alone, Zendesk’s Support Team comes without a help center unless you buy one separately, while Freshdesk’s Growth plan includes a customer portal. Freshdesk also sells day passes for occasional agents: $2, $7 or $12 a day on Growth, Pro or Enterprise, and $5, $10 or $15 on Omni. Our guides to Freshdesk pricing and Zendesk pricing list every add-on.
AI agents: Freddy AI sessions versus Zendesk resolutions
The biggest structural difference is how each vendor bills its AI agent. Freshdesk counts sessions. Zendesk counts verified resolutions.
Freshdesk: per session. Freddy AI Agent is available on Growth, Pro and Enterprise. Each account gets 500 free sessions once; after that, sessions cost $49 per 100, or $0.49 each. For email, a session is a 72-hour window from the customer’s first email, however many replies the AI sends. For chat, it covers every interaction within 24 hours of the session’s start. Session packs expire with your payment cycle, so sessions bought on quarterly billing expire quarterly. Every session counts, whether or not the AI resolves the question.
Zendesk: per verified resolution. Zendesk says AI agents are included in every Support and Suite plan, with pricing based on automated resolutions. The mechanics are in its help center:
- A monthly allowance per seat. Each agent seat adds $2 a month on Support plans and Suite Team, $5 on Suite Professional and $10 on Suite Enterprise, up to $5,000 a year. Unused allowance does not carry over (Managing resolution allowances, accessed September 27, 2026).
- Three resolution tiers. Since May 18, 2026, assisted escalations and contained resolutions do not count against the allowance. Verified resolutions, which a language model confirms after the conversation ends, do (About automated resolution tiers, accessed September 27, 2026).
- Overage. By default, AI agents keep answering after the allowance runs out, and the extra resolutions are billed monthly. If you turn overage off, the AI agents pause at the limit and conversations go to your team.
Zendesk does not publish the price of a resolution. Its help center says that buying more allowance before overages occur costs less per resolution than overage billing, so ask sales for both rates in writing. Zendesk also sells Forethought AI agents through sales, after completing its acquisition of Forethought on March 26, 2026.
Assistants for agents. Freddy AI Copilot costs $29 per agent a month billed annually ($35 monthly), is available on Pro and Enterprise and can be assigned to as many agents as you choose. Zendesk’s Copilot costs $50 per agent a month billed annually and can be added to Suite Professional and higher plans. Zendesk’s trial includes Copilot.
If the AI agent handles 1,000 conversations a month, one session each, Freddy AI Agent costs $490 once the free sessions are used. On Zendesk, 10 agents on Suite Professional carry a $50 monthly allowance, and the cost beyond it depends on how many conversations end in a verified resolution and on the rate Zendesk quotes. The units differ, so compare monthly totals from a sample of your own tickets, not unit prices.
Ticketing, channels and automation
Freshdesk. Growth covers ticketing with a shared inbox, analytics and reporting, threads and tasks, and roles and permissions. Pro adds a multilingual help desk, custom dashboards, intelligent routing, multiple SLA policies and external collaborators. Enterprise adds skill-based routing, a sandbox, audit logs and IP allowlisting. Freshdesk Omni puts email, chat, phone and messaging in one workspace, with WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram and LINE among its channels (Freshdesk Omni, checked September 27, 2026). On Omni Pro and Enterprise, you can connect other messaging channels and your own phone carrier through Freshworks’ APIs.
Zendesk. Support Team covers email ticketing with routing, prebuilt dashboards, pre-written responses, automations and triggers. On Support plans, social messaging is limited to public channels such as Facebook and X. Suite Team adds messaging and live chat, telephony, omnichannel routing and social messaging through WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram Direct, LINE, WeChat, X direct messages and Apple Messages for Business (Getting started with social messaging, accessed September 27, 2026). Suite Professional adds skills-based routing and an IVR phone tree, and Suite Enterprise adds intelligent triage, approval workflows, a sandbox and custom agent roles.
For phone support, Zendesk includes telephony from Suite Team, an IVR phone tree on Suite Professional and generative AI for voice on Suite Enterprise, and it sells a Contact Center product at $83 per agent a month. It bills App Builder, Action Builder and Voice by usage beyond the plan’s allowances, so budget phone minutes separately. Freshworks sells its cloud phone system, Freshcaller, as a separate product from $15 per agent a month plus call minutes (Freshcaller pricing, checked September 27, 2026).
Help center and self-service
Freshdesk includes a customer portal and knowledge base on every plan, including the $19 Growth plan, and Pro adds a multilingual help desk. On Zendesk, a help center is included from Suite Team at $55 per agent a month. Support Team does not include one; Zendesk sells its Knowledge product separately for Support plans (About the Zendesk Knowledge plan types, accessed September 27, 2026).
An AI agent can only answer what your help content covers, so budget time for articles on either platform. If you already run a help center elsewhere, check the import options before you choose.
What a 10-agent team pays on each
These examples use annual list prices from September 27, 2026, before tax, discounts and phone usage. The Freshdesk examples assume the account’s 500 free AI Agent sessions are used up.
| 10 agents | Freshdesk | Zendesk |
|---|---|---|
| Email only | Growth: 10 × $19 = $190 | Support Team: 10 × $19 = $190 |
| Chat, email and messaging, entry plans | Omni Growth: 10 × $29 = $290 | Suite Team: 10 × $55 = $550 |
| Mid plans, AI agent on 1,000 conversations | Omni Pro with 1,000 sessions: $790 + $490 = $1,280 | Suite Professional: $1,150, plus verified resolutions beyond the $50 allowance |
| Mid plans with the agent assistant | Omni Pro, Copilot and 1,000 sessions: 10 × ($79 + $29) + $490 = $1,570 | Suite Professional and Copilot: 10 × ($115 + $50) = $1,650, plus resolutions beyond the allowance |
On monthly billing, the seats alone on the mid plans cost $950 on Freshdesk Omni Pro and $1,490 on Zendesk Suite Professional.
Two lines grow on both. Seats grow with every hire, because both vendors charge per agent. AI usage grows with automation: on Freshdesk every AI session counts, and on Zendesk every verified resolution beyond the allowance costs extra, at a price you get from sales.
Moving between Freshdesk and Zendesk
From Zendesk to Freshdesk. Freshworks publishes a free Migrate from Zendesk app on its Marketplace that moves tickets, conversations and more into Freshdesk or Freshdesk Omni (Freshworks Marketplace, checked September 27, 2026). Third-party migration apps are listed there too.
From Freshdesk to Zendesk. Zendesk says you cannot migrate everything through its interface. Tickets come in through its Ticket Import API; triggers do not run on imported tickets, and first reply and first resolution times are not imported. For larger moves, Zendesk points to Marketplace apps, partners and Zendesk Professional Services (Zendesk help, accessed September 27, 2026).
Either way, import a sample first, plan how you will recreate automations, SLA policies, macros and reports, and keep the old account read-only until you no longer need it. If tools read your Zendesk data with API tokens, note that Zendesk is retiring them: accounts can no longer create tokens from October 27, 2026, and all tokens stop working on April 30, 2027 (Zendesk announcement, accessed September 27, 2026).
Which one to choose
Choose Freshdesk if:
- You want chat and messaging at a lower price per agent: Freshdesk Omni Growth costs $29, against $55 for Zendesk Suite Team.
- You want a knowledge base on the entry plan.
- You prefer AI costs you can predict per session, with 500 free sessions to test.
- You need occasional agents on day passes, or you already use other Freshworks products.
Choose Zendesk if:
- You run phone support and want telephony in the plan, an IVR phone tree from Suite Professional and Zendesk’s workforce and contact center add-ons.
- You would rather pay only for verified AI resolutions, and you can get the price per resolution in writing.
- You need Suite Enterprise controls such as approval workflows, a sandbox and custom agent roles.
- You depend on apps and integrations built for Zendesk.
Both charge per agent, so the bill grows with every seat you add. Run the same sample of real tickets through both trials before you sign an annual contract. If Intercom is also on your list, see our Intercom vs Zendesk comparison.
When a software team needs a third option
Freshdesk and Zendesk are general help desks. If you build software and many tickets end in a bug report, a feature request or a question for engineering, Gleap is a third option to put on the list.
Gleap prices the workspace, not the agent. Starter costs $49 a month with one seat, Team $149 with unlimited seats and projects, and Pro $299, billed annually ($59, $179 and $359 billed monthly); Enterprise starts at $999 a month billed annually. Kai, the AI support agent, is on every plan. AI usage is billed separately through prepaid credits, by the tokens and model each task uses. Kai averages about $0.05 per conversation, so 1,000 conversations use about $50 of credits; real usage varies with the model, the context and the length of each conversation (Gleap pricing). For 10 agents, that is $149 a month on Team or $299 on Pro, billed annually, plus AI credits.
What changes is what happens after the ticket. On Team, customers report bugs from inside your app or website with a screenshot and technical details attached, and feature requests collect votes on a roadmap. On Pro, Kai Resolve investigates hard tickets and prepares coding tasks, and once a teammate starts a task, Kai Code opens a pull request that your team reviews and merges. After moving support from email to Gleap, Gather cut its response times from about 30 minutes to about five (Gather customer story).
The trade-offs are real. Gleap has no free plan. Starter has one seat and one project, and the knowledge base, in-app bug reporting, the feature roadmap and the WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Slack and Telegram channels need Team. Kai Resolve, Kai Code and Kai PM need Pro. Gleap has no phone channel, contact center or workforce management, so teams that run phone support are better served by either of the two.
Gleap imports from both. The Zendesk importer brings companies, contacts and tickets with their comments and attachments, and the Freshdesk importer brings contacts and tickets with their conversations, private notes and attachments. Freshdesk help center articles come over with a separate importer, and Zendesk articles by CSV. The Zendesk migration guide walks through the move step by step, and the comparisons of Gleap and Zendesk and Gleap and Freshdesk list the differences.
Gleap publishes this comparison and competes with both products. Every Freshdesk and Zendesk fact above comes from the vendors’ own pages, with the date we checked it.
